ever been afraid of writing something in case it's crap?

Ok, 'afraid' is the wrong word.

Ever have something in your head, which you kind of like and kind of think ought to work, but worry that when you put it down on paper/the screen, it won't be quite as awesome as you imagine it to be?

yeah, I've got that.

*twiddles thumbs*

I get that with cakes. I picture in my head how I hope they're going to look, but am never sure they'll actually end up looking that good.

One of the rare occasions when a cake looked as good in real life as it did in my head was this one:

Summarise the key points and concepts somehow, even if it's only as bullet points or a rough storyboard. Once you've got those pinned down, play your idea through in your head using the summary as a touchpoint and modifying as necessary until you're happy it flows smoothly. Then set down your proper prose.

Thanks! And yeah, I admit to being inclined to show that one off more than most.

Constantly.

I just tell myself that even if it is, it's not going to get better if I don't practice.

Sometimes. More often than not, I can see what I want to write in my head but can't get it onto paper.

it's a pretty short piece, a typical Monty snippet. I should just write the damn thing and see how it looks.

I like the idea of the key points/concepts and storyboard though.

usually I read it back later and think "that's not quite how I imagined it would come across" or someone will comment that they couldn't see how to get from [x] to [y] and I realise that I've either missed that bit out, or completely b0rked it.

You've got the advantage with a Monty piece that you know how the characters interact with their environment and each other, so the flow is probably already there. So write it already! :-)
