My brother's girlfriend wants to get him a Playstation 3 for his birthday (lucky chap), and wants to know the difference between the 40GB and 80GB version.

Alas, I know nowt about them, so my first answer would be "40GB and the price"

What, if anything, would be a more constructive answer?

I could be wrong here, but I think only the 80GB version is backwards-compatible with PS2 games.

Many PS3 games install stuff (more than just save games) onto the hard drive, so the more space you have, the better. BioShock (which is awesome, BTW) takes about ten minutes to fully install. And then there's the download content: updates, extra game levels, game demos, songs for Rock Band and Guitar Hero, etc. Stuff adds up.

But (and here's where it gets weird) 40GB 60GB PS3s are downwardly compatible with the PS2, whereas the 80GB is not* (both will play PS1 games).

There's a good comparison chart on the Wikipedia entry. My recommendation: go for the biggest hard drive you can afford.


* the one with 4 USB ports is downwardly compatible. Mine is the 2 USB port variety.

that seems to be the general consensus, apart from the bigger one having more USB slots.

It's a big deal if you've got lots of PS2 games in your collection...
