40GB60GB PS3s are downwardly compatible with the PS2, whereas the 80GB is not* (both will play PS1 games).There's a good comparison chart on the Wikipedia entry. My recommendation: go for the biggest hard drive you can afford.
* the one with 4 USB ports is downwardly compatible. Mine is the 2 USB port variety.
