Date: 2009-11-28 02:01 am (UTC)Coworker Maggie and I got assigned the Thanksgiving Holiday this year. This means we have to come in and do anything critical that has to be done in the lab on Thursday and Friday, and anything the regular weekend person can't cover on Saturday and Sunday.
I should clarify that everyone in the lab gets one holiday to work per year. Most of these are one day plus a weekend, so if the regular weekend person works, each of the 2 people is probably only going to have to come in once for 2-4 hours of work.
The big boss has a big project underway, which involves lots of tedious work. It's come to a head for this holiday weekend. Which could have been predicted.
So, Maggie and I each worked for about 5 hours yesterday on Thanksgiving Day. I also took a one hour break for Thanksgiving Dinner with mom at a nearby restaurant (the Gandy Dancer).
Today Maggie and I each worked about 7 hours.
Tomorrow Maggie will work several hours.
Sunday Maggie will work a couple of hours and I will work several hours.
And the kicker? We're both salaried, and this is considered part of the job. So we're not getting paid a cent for all this extra work time. And we don't get any time off in exchange for it either.
When hourly employees work the holiday, they get overtime pay for it. We get zilch.

Date: 2009-11-28 06:31 am (UTC)That's how we do Thanksgiving Day here. I think the Canadians have something a week or so back called Remembrance Day. Is that from across the pond?

Slightly nervous I will spend 3 hours alone in a pub but then I always am.

American football. American footballs have pointy ends. But other than that I'm sure it's almost exactly like soccer.
Or perhaps I'm still sedated from the L-Triptophan.
