I gave my mug a really good clean this morning. Properly scrubbed, got rid of the patina of tea build-up. Beautiful.

Dried it off and promptly dropped it. Shattered all over the floor.

Maybe the tea patina is what was holding it together all along.

I once dropped a coffee mug on a linoleum floor. It bounced right back up into my hands. I'm sure it landed on some magical structural point that could withstand, deflect, and disperse impact shocks and that will never be discovered again.

That was almost thirty years ago. I can't remember for sure, but I think I'm drinking out of that mug right now. This has been a favorite since before I left home.

er.. that probably doesn't make you feel better. But I still marvel at that moment when the mug leapt back into my hands. I even had a witness who couldn't believe it.

not so much treasured, luckily. It was my work mug, and I had gone through several to find the optimum size, shape and handle so that one could carry it easily along with several others when making a tea round.

Now I need to get another one. Boo! Boo! I say.

It was relatively new, but seemed to pick up the patina pretty quickly. I did quite like it though.

I can beat that story. One time at university we were larking around and for various reasons, ended up lobbing one guy's mug out of the window. We were five storeys up.

It bounced. Completely unscathed.

Didn't bounce the second time, mind you.

Now I'm disappointed that no one was there to catch it after the first bounce. It went to all that trouble to defy the laws of physics...

I do enjoy a well-designed mug. I have a few that are worthy of my use (only one is my at-home morning mug, though). On one hand it's challenging to have such particular standards for capacity, wall angle and edge design, but on the other, knowing exactly what I want in a mug keeps me from buying every cute one that I see. One can definitely have too many mugs, as evidenced by the quantities sold at garage, church and rummage sales every summer.

The mug didn't break on the first bounce. So we took it back upstairs and lobbed it out again!

My personal favourite mug is my Starbucks City mug from Barcelona. Perfect size for a really good cup of tea, nice big handle, comfortable to use. Starubucks over here don't really do city mugs other than for London. And it seems a bit... odd to have one of them. Will just have to go travelling again!
