the varnish has gone on, but it's a clearish mucky brown tinge.

Bah. "does exactly what it says on the tin"

well, the tin says "clear varnish", not "nearly clear, but with a brownish tinge"

Hopefully it'll dry clear.

I've never varnished over paint - I just tend to use gloss - but if you are to do so, then it is important to acknowledge that "clear" doesn't necessarily equate to completely without colour in varnish - it just means that there's no solid pigmentation that would obscure underlying visible detail.

That manufacturer's range covers a variety of degrees of clarity; which exactly did you buy?

ronseal ultra tough mattcoat clear varnish, 'tough polyurethane matt varnish for interior wood'

*I* wanted to just buy some gloss paint - we'd originally got some Crown satin finish for wood in Winterbloom, but it's got knocked to bits with being on the windowsill/doorstep.

Ah. Couldn't comment on what it says on the can, but that'd be the one that their website describes as "an ultra-tough polyurethane varnish which provides a rich, clear, mellow finish to interior wood that is ideal for use over wood dyes".

Sympathise on the problem with abused gloss surfaces. There are products out there that claim much greater wear resistance, but I've yet to be convinced.

Yes, in retrospect the phrase 'mellow finish' should have been a warning...
