well, the tin says "clear varnish", not "nearly clear, but with a brownish tinge"

Hopefully it'll dry clear.

Ah. Couldn't comment on what it says on the can, but that'd be the one that their website describes as "an ultra-tough polyurethane varnish which provides a rich, clear, mellow finish to interior wood that is ideal for use over wood dyes".

Sympathise on the problem with abused gloss surfaces. There are products out there that claim much greater wear resistance, but I've yet to be convinced.
