uploading a zillion podcasts onto my mp3 player, on the basis that I'll not listen to them here at home, and can't download them at work, but want to listen to them whilst at work.

which makes sense to me. Lots of choice there, including some new ones. Including the Instant Classic podcast.

:-)

what podcasts might I be missing out on? Which are on your must-listen list?

[livejournal.com profile] pkdan, when are you doing another Caffeineland?

*checks*

on the list, but appears to be some weird .m4a file.

.m4a is the default iTunes format, AAC - Stephen uses it because there's a tool you can use on a Mac to make an "enhanced" podcast - which means you can divide a podcast into sort of sections so a different picture and mini title comes up for each bit (hard to properly explain without you looking at one). It's easy enough to convert to MP3 in iTunes (right click on the episode, select convert to MP3) or with other tools.

ah, righto. I didn't put it on my mp3 player as I'm not sure it could cope with the .m4a format, and I was already putting a ton of other stuff on there. The 'convert to mp3' thing sounds familiar, now you mention it.

I'm very fond of the Word podcast, even though it's basically middle aged blokes having a moan and a laugh about music. Speechification is excellent - they put up the best of radio documentaries from all over the place, a lot of Radio 4 and Radio 2 but Aussie and American stuff too. Answer Me This is very funny and done by friends of mine. I also like the Guardian Music Weekly and Media Talk podcasts, Radio 1 Introducing, Tachyon TV (occasional, but hilarious), NPR All Songs Considered, NPR Live Concerts From All Songs Considered etc.

cool, I'll check them out at home later.

I do like some of the NPR stuff - Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me is pretty funny.

lots of poker podcasts
I avoid the serious ones and go for Ante up, which is basically 2 Journalist types in the US who happen to like poker. Bit like a chat between mates
And for the GB stuff there is "on the rail" Which is slightly more serious but still very entertaining.
Start with show 13. As one of the presenters ended up being interviewed as she had made it into day 4 of the world series of poker, cashing for over $40 K
2 years ago she didn't know how to play. Also has an interview with Steve Davis the snooker player.
The whole show is a testament to people getting out there and doing something that they enjoy, the excitement in their voices is almost tangible. The actual game is secondary.

Both podcasts are on itunes
