It was along about 2004-ish I decided not to participate anymore... I found that it was really because everyone else was doing it that bugged me the most. That, and it wasn't about quality, it was about quantity - in most people's minds. I write some of my best, err, better stuff sans NaNo these days. It was a nice challenge. But for me it was more of a fad.
Most people who participated in NaNo (that I knew of at the time) had a pile of rubbish at the end of the month.
I tend to write free flow, for the most part; picking pieces and passages out after the fact and re-working them into something else.
I applaud people who take the challenge seriously and direct their enthusiasm for the challenge accordingly. But my experience (back in the day, as they say) was severely lacking. Maybe it was my particular geographic location... Maybe it was just me. (Likely the latter!)
I think I might give it a shot, and use it to write down everything about last year's London-to-Mongolia drive... which I definitely want to do soon, because we're going to do it again in 2009! If I don't write down the first one at some point, I'll start confusing it with the second.
