right. I'm *this* close to ordering my shiny new PC (as detailed here), but keep adding in a graphics card, upping it to 4GB of memory (yes, I *know* windoze XP only recognises the first 3.5GB, but to me 3.5GB>2GB = win)

then get scared and take it out again.

feh. It's not *that* much extra, I'm paying it off (well, back into my ISA) in installments anyway, and I reckon having something like the nVidia GeForce 8600GT 512MB for an extra 40 quid can't hurt, can it?

*wibbles*

could also save myself £50 by not having windoze at all and going for a linux setup, but that scares me even more, and K and the Beans like their windows stuff. If it was just my PC, I'd probably throw caution to the wind and go for it...

You can always try Linux, and install Windows later in no one likes it. If you like Linux, and no one else does, you could even dual boot.

I think it'd be more like they would go 'so how do I do [x]?', and need to do [x] *now*, whereas with XP we know how to do [x] already. Learning curve and all that.

I tried linux for a bit. Oh probably 4 years ago. Dual booting. Then I realised I was falling back to windows all the time, mainly 'cause I was to lazy or pressed for time to look up how to do what I needed in linux.
Over the years I have used most flavours of win, dos and hell I even used OS/2 for a bit so it isn't the difference that puts me off, just too damm busy.

I've tried various flavours of linux over the years, and promptly given up as it's never yet managed to recognise my internet connection, either through the ADSL modem, or the wireless.

and if I can't get on the 'net, I'm not interested. I know it *should* be possible, but like you, don't have the time or energy to devote to monkeying around with it, and don't want to deprive K of the internet for the time it would take for me to sort it out.

1st time I tried it point blank refused to believe I had a mouse.
Now that was a show stopper.
Every time I have ever upgraded I have always promised myself *this time* I will learn, using the old machine as a test bed. Then I don't. Eventually I am informed to "get rid of that bloody old PC"
