Finally, Indy 4 is out on DVD and I can get to watch it!

I've heard all the so-so reviews, but I'm still excited. It's Indy! How can that not be ace?

I saw Die Hard 4. How long a list of ways that you can kill a franchise when you revisit it several years on would you like? :-)

I'm rather hoping that Indy will have faired better, but the trailers they're running at the moment for the DVD release haven't filled me with joy. OTOH, maybe I'm just a grumpy sod at the moment.

DH4 was ace! Bonkers and totally OTT, but enormous fun.

imho, ymmv (as it clearly does) :-)

EB managed to get to see it at the cinema with his grandma and I managed to completely fail to orgnise my life in time to see it (well, to see it in enough time for it not to be on one of the pokey little cinema screens).

I'd have been happier with DH4 as a movie if they hadn't had "Die Hard" in the title and hadn't called the central character John McClane; it's OK as an action thriller, if a little stylised for my tastes, but I found it completely and utterly soulless. McClane as a coldly dispassionate agent of justice just didn't work for me. It did for many others, as its IMDB rating shows.

much like the new Italian Job, which only bore a fleeting resemblance to the original (it had minis in it, and some gold).

I still rather like the new version, in that it's a perfectly competent heist flick, and I would enjoy it just as much if it were titled such.

Just go in expecting it to be cheesy and over the top and have FUN!

Don't go in with a stick up your butt like so many other people did. And don't expect cinematic genius either. I can guarantee the people that went into it with high high expections... they hated it.

We laughed and had fun with it :) It's got some lovely Indy moments and some truly wtf? moments too. :)

my pre-criteria for enjoying the film are:

1. Does it have Harrison Ford in it?
2. Does he have a fedora?
3. Does he have a whip?
4. is there some mystical hokum about a McGuffin that he needs to steal/retrieve/etc?
bonus points for:
5. wisecracks
6. Cate Blanchett
7. Karen Allen
8. No Short Round. :-)

Cinematic genius? C'mon, George Lucas is involved! Strikes that one off the list immediately.

You should be fine then...you are going in with low expectations!

I had listened to the others who loved it. Wish I hadn't listened. I did *TRY* to go in with lower expectations but it didn't work. I did a LOT of eye rolling. Even Jon, who loves that kind of stuff, was wondering when it would be over. Still glad I watched it though. Don't think I'd watch it again, however. (And I LOVED the first 3!)

I was expecting much wittier dialogue and stunts that actually "made sense" and furthered the plot at least a little and weren't just there for the sake of putting in an action sequence.

The back plot had potential that they never really got into.

And I have to admit, as much as I love action sequences - especially the old-school Indy style ones, these were so over the top cheesy they were making us groan.

EB and I watched the first 40 minutes or so before his bedtime, and both of us were hooked. I loved the bit with the fridge. EB did have a tendency to say 'ooh! this is the bit with the fridge!', but that sort of added to the fun.
