still on The Barber of Seville, which is rather wonderful to write to.

I need some more opera in my life, I think. I'm sure I used to have a copy of Tosca knocking around, but I can't find it, and have a horrible feeling I sold it.

The trouble with classical music and opera, I've found, is that there are *so* many recordings of stuff, and being a relative n00b, I have no idea what constitutes a 'good' one.

So, I'd like a copy of Tosca, and probably The Marriage of Figaro (which I saw many years ago and loved to bits).

Suggestions please?

This is a damn fine Tosca. Sure, it's mono, but it's Callas. It's hard to go wrong with the old EMI red label stuff.

Madama Butterfly is wonderful, and I've not heard all of Carmina Burana (other than the famous bit)

I'm not an opera buff either, but I'd recommend Purcell's Dido and Aeneas (I love early music) and anything by Mozart.

Opera has some wonderful moments. And some terrible half-hours.
