got my 5-port USB card this morning, which was pretty fast!

I'm curious about the setup though - four external USB ports, fine. But one internal port. What would you plug into an internal port?

[edit] I do have a USB bluetooth dongle which I could use in there, I suppose. The wifi dongle really needs to live outside the case, given the issues I've had with the connection between the room the computer is in and the router downstairs...

Also for the technologically minded amongst you: My PC case has two front-mounted USB ports, but they don't seem to work. I'm reasonably sure I've plugged the correct lead into the correct bit of the motherboard. Any suggestions?

Suppose the internal port could be used to connect a device like say, a USB HDD that you might want to keep inside the case for security?

I used to have similar problems with front USB ports - they rarely worked because the motherboard manuals were written in such bad English, but I persevered and got them right on the last PC I built. Having said that, I never use them...I have a USB patch bay on the desk top!

I was thinking of picking up an 8GB usb key to transfer music from home to work (save keeping mp3s on this work laptop) and a working front USB port would be most useful!

I'm wondering if it's something in the BIOS that I need to turn on, or some driver that I've not installed.

Might be - one other thing to consider is, even if the sockets are correctly connected to th board, have you checked the mobo manual to see if the mobo itself has jumpers which need setting?

Also (am leaving no stone unturned here....so forgive me if this sounds ridiculous), do you have any security apps which might be blocking use of the front USB sockets?

Any clues from the device manager list?

internal USB ports can be quite useful for connecting up things like add-on card readers, software-key dongles and such..

You can get internally mounted multi card readers that would go in the internal one :D

Oh, and check the device manager to see if the front ports are detected... Also check the bios...
