EB and I started reading The Hobbit tonight.

It took some persuasion on my behalf to get him away from his beloved Horrid Henry books, but he agreed to give it a try.

Note: EB *loves* Horrid Henry. He has four (maybe five) books which we've read (*I* have read) through at least three times each. We now have a rule - if we have Horrid Henry one night, it *has* to be something else the next.

EB was grumbling 'why do I have these Horrid Henry books when you keep making me have other books as well?'

erm, because I really don't like Horrid Henry, and not every night. And you, my dear EB, have a ton of other books. Great books. Roald Dahl, Dalmatians. Lots and lots of other books.

So, we started on The Hobbit. I'm not sure how into it he is, but the thought of imminent dwarves, quests for gold, wizards and dragons is keeping his interest, for now.

EB will quite happily read several Horrid Henry stories himself once I've finished, and has to be reminded to stop reading and turn the light off.

:-)

so I want to read him the *good* stories instead.

i'm the youngest of 7 kids, and my dad worked out of town (he's a ranch owner) so we only got to see him from friday to monday, as soon as i could read (and even before that, i would pretend like i was reading the paper next to him), he started choosing books for me to read.. he made me read "Don Quijote" when i was like 8.. anyways, ever monday, before he left, he would tell me how many chapters i would have to read before he got back, and when he did, i had to tell him all about it.. this was my time with him, and with a wife and 7 kids, this time was precious to me.. and then i fell in love with books.. til this day, we still discuss them

Have you got 'The Starlight Barking' to go with '101 Dalmations' ?

Oh, and how about reading him 'The Princess Bride' ? All the kissing bits cut out, but has giants and dwarfs and adventure etc.

Good luck, I read the first Harry Potter to Kate a couple of years ago, but had to summarise a lot of it, as she wanted action, not description. We are still at rainbow fairies *arrggghh*

Actually, she preferred Truckers, may dig them out again.

we were discussing it on the walk to school this morning. He wanted to know more about The Ring, and the dragon, and why the dragon had all the gold and stuff.

Cool :) We have a few Horrid Henry books if you want any more :-PPP

Holly likes them, Kate doesn't.

i thought i´d wait and leave it to the girl, to pick it up and read it for herself - i remember being very immersed in and enchanted by the story, as a kid.
i´d like to read it again too though... so maybe i´ll read it to her rather.... hmmm

The Hobbit gave me nightmares when I read it at around EB's age, but perhaps yr son and heir is made of sterner stuff.

(My mum threatened to take it away and I absolutely refused.)

Also, I've been reading Horrid Henry on my lunchtime trips to Foyles. I think they're rather good, but then I don't have to read them out loud night after night after night.

They're about Horrid Henry and his brother Perfect Peter, as well as his 'friends' Moody Margaret, Sour Susan, Weeping William etc etc.

The stories in themselves are ok, but all go along the same lines - Horrid Henry has to do something, has a brilliant, spectacular idea on how to not do it/get someone else to do it, and hijinks ensue.

They just get a bit much after the 4,434,132nd time of re-reading.
