one of the things which interested me yesterday was the use of off-camera flash. I think my next investment will be some kind of speedlight for the D50. Not sure what to look for though - suggestions?

Any of the old SBs work well, 24-26. I use the Vivitar 285HV (if you get one MAKE SURE IT'S THE HV!)

people on the flickr group seem to favour the SB600/800 over the older flashes - I just want something I can play around with off-camera.

Assume I could use an SB-24 with a wire attached to the camera? I'd have to set the flash manually though (not a problem, better way to learn what's going on)

You can use it with a wire.
You can use it with a poverty wizard.
You can use it with a pocket wizard.

On digital, manual is fine. Guess, test, shoot again. It's not hard.

Also investing in one of the older flashes means you can grab the other bits you need, namely a light stand and brolly.

I have a Speedlight 600 for my D50, as it also works with my N6006. So far, I've been decently happy with it.

the 600/800 are out of my price range at the moment, alas.

Pick up any flash that has a power setting, and some cheapass ebay remote triggers. That's it. My OCF is a 30 year-old Chinon thing that came free with my Bronica because the owner wanted rid.
