hmm. Turned PC on, beeped then stopped.

displaying CPU details on screen, but nothing - keyboard not responsive, CPU fan and internal fans and disks whirring, but nothing else.

turned off, turned back on.

same. single beep on POST, suggests all ok.

took cover off, tried reseating cards/memory

same

tried unplugging/replugging HDs

same

unplugged all USB leads from back

bingo - it's up and running again.

weird.

another note- the heatsink atop the onboard graphics is fairly warm/hot to the touch, but the PC has been off all night...

I don't use the onboard graphics, as I've got a separate graphics card.

*nervous*

Was it trying to boot from a USB device? I get that when I leave my iPod plugged in and try to reboot...

I wonder if it was trying to find my camera...

If I had a quid for every time I had to do all that carry on to the old machine I could have bought this one much sooner. But the good news is that if carried on working, albeit capriciously, for another year after it started its shennanigans. Sometimes it liked to have its power turned off at the wall and left for a while to consider its wickedness before it behaved. I dunno why it did it - for shits and giggles as far as anyone could tell.

I used to have this kind of drama, then I switched to a mac. As well as being nice and shiny it just seems to work.
