this looks like an interesting book:

Script & Scribble: The Rise and Fall of Handwriting
"In what has become a largely digitized culture, the once-ubiquitous fountain pen is losing ground as generations of students are trained not in the time-honored methods of penmanship, but in the impersonal skill of keyboarding. In Script and Scribble, Kitty Burns Florey explores the causes and implications of this change and advocates a coexistence of the two — a thoughtful embrace of new technology, with a celebration of the rich and artful tradition of handwritten penmanship.

Florey's charming and informative book explores the evolution of handwriting, from cuneiform and hieroglyphics to Blackletter and Italic to the often hasty scribble of today. Discussing not only the styles of writing, but the instruments used to achieve each, Script and Scribble is a journey from the quill to the keyboard that no penmanship enthusiast should be without...

I love writing stuff by hand. There's just something about the ink on the page which you just can't beat.

I definitely agree. I just wish that my handwriting was better!

I love collecting pens (you may have noticed!) but don't have a fountain pen.

yet.

I'd also love to do something like this:

hand lettered cards and invitations. Fun!

I never got on with fountain pens, mostly due to being left-handed. A couple of high school teachers insisted on pupils using fountain pens instead of biros, but after some blotchy essays, I got permission to use a biro instead.

My handwriting tends to be a bit of a scribble now; partly because I do as much any more and also because my hands tend to be stiff and holding a pen gets uncomfortable soon. (on the other hand, my typing speed is much better)

A friend recently remarked that when we were at school we tended to have a ridge on the middle finger of the writing hand from holding a pen. Kids now won't develop that, as they use keyboards so much more.
