gah! ipods!

K spent a while building a custom 'on the go' playlist on her nano today, then when I plugged the nano in to put some podcasts on, iTunes wiped everything off it.

iTunes also lost a bunch of songs from my library.

Bad iTunes. Look! they're there! Cunningly hidden in the \mp3 folder, with all the others!

*glares at iTunes*

anyone got any idea why iTunes would wipe what's on an ipod?

All I can think is that I'd originally synched it up using playlists - one playlist per album K wanted as iTunes seems to let you synch *everything* by an artist or nothing, unless you do playlists - and at some point I've cleard down the library and re-pointed iTunes at the \mp3 directory.

*shrug*

graspin' at straws...

Are you trying to sync multiple ipods with the same library?

Does itunes support that? I wonder if it's bitchy about something there.

nah, seems to recognise both as independent ipods and have unique sync requests for each.

I've just re-done a playlist on K's ipod and re-synched and it's now put the new nano-created playlist into my iTunes playlist. Which is what it should have done before.

I have no idea.... but best of luck figuring it all out. iTunes drives me a bit mad! XD the only way we manage it is synching only on our own laptops.

Aaand this is why I turn off auto-sync on any devices that offer to do it. Phones, PDAs, iPods, removable media, all of those are told "no" when I come across a dialogue box that says "do you wish to sync automatically?"

I've lost too many outlook contacts over the years to ever really trust auto sync ever again.

I certainly manage mine manually, but I was hoping it would be nice and easy for K to sort out herself rather than her having to pester me to do it.

Have you thought about dumping iTunes? LJ Chiller has found a software gizmo for this. I can go get the name of it if you like?

I never use sync, I'm always afraid of it doing things without my permission.

My computer decided to hide, lose or otherwise mess about with some of my iTunes downloads last week. Thankfully I was able to transfer them from my iPod (which you can do with things purchased from iTunes, just not with anything else...)
