looking at upgrading my mobile phone. The Blackberry is ok, but clunky and with terrible reception.

On offer is the HTC Tattoo - the HTC Hero's cheaper cousin. I'd love the Hero, but it would cost me £150 on top of the contract, whereas the Tattoo is free. Both run Google's Android OS, which looks like fun.

I had considered the iPhone too, but again, cost was a serious factor. Orange offer a free iPhone with contracts of £30/month or more, but not the 3GS model

Anyone out there got an HTC phone?

The OS is a little glitchy. I am not sure it was fully baked before it was released. It has good intent, but processes all too often are stalled or forced close because they hang. Sometimes the touch screen just doesn't respond, and I don't know what to do with that. Oh, and one (apparently known) bug I encountered was the phone automatically reboots sometimes when you dial 911 (emergency). The open-source platform is also good intent, but applications that don't go through some oversight/scrutiny can be really buggy. Then again, there are wicked cool aps that have little practical use, like wikitude and barcode scanner and goggles. I mean, they are good for what they are meant for, but not usually every day tasks.

summary.
iphone = dated tech but best apps
android = top tech and app store improving daily.

mag seemed to think android better platform for future, but not right *now*

I have an older HTC Excalibur. Love it! Of course, it doesn't even have 3G, let alone Android...

HTC Hero, and honestly, it has transformed my life. The whole AR thing is amazing (download "Layar"); the GPS/map thing means I always know where I am and which way I'm pointing, and overlaying google street view onto reality is a mind-f*ck, but a good one. I love this gadget more than I have ever loved another gadget.

As an addendum: I always wanted a phone that had the functionality of my PC. My phone now makes my PCs look very last decade.

I'm due an upgrade in March...

I think I'll go for the New 9700 Bold, but if the Nexus One is available by then, I might be tempted away...

I've had several HTC phones - all Windows ones, though, so no experience with Android, apart from a bit of fiddling around as a second OS on my current phone.

They can be a very, very mixed bag. The TyTN II was a great phone, probably the best I've ever used. I got an upgrade to a Touch Pro, which turned out to be terrible, so I went back to the TyTN II, which is now quite old but does everything beautifully. As I write, it's acting as a wireless router for my Eee. Joy. :)

If you've got a good HTC phone, you'll love it. Just make sure it's what you want before you get it and try it out first if you can.
