I learned to tie a proper bow tie at university. Bow ties look great at the end of the evening, untied. But only if they're *real* ties.
I remember one day going into quite a posh gentleman's outfitter asking for a bow tie. The gent behind the counter looked me up and down (I was wearing scruffy jeans and an Iron Maiden t-shirt, iirc) and produced a tray of nasty, cheap, clip-on ties. I politely asked if he had anything in silk, that one could tie oneself, and his attitude changed in the blink of an eye. I ended up with a rather nice dark plum bow tie, in silk.
