apparently HTC are pushing out the Android 2.1 update to the HTC Hero in Europe *right now*

*waits*

they've been promising this for months now. As I'm on Orange, I bet I have to wait another couple of weeks...

Erm, you know you've been able to get the 2.1 firmware update since April, don't you? http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=283&cat=2&dl_id=864

whu?

I searched the HTC Europe site just yesterday and the only ROM update for Hero on Orange was dated 2009! CNET had an article which said the update was being pushed out OTA over the next few days, hence my excitement.

This is the 2.1 update?

Don't forget to back up *everything* - it'll wipe out all your SMS messages, call log, apps, everything that isn't on the SD card. If you want to back up your texts I recommend getting hold of "SMS Backup and Restore" from the Marketplace, which is bloody brilliant.

I clear off my SMS messages regularly anyway. Presume I can re-download the apps from marketplace.

If you go to
http://www.htc.com/uk/support.aspx

you'll see the announcement of the FOTA update to 2.1, in two parts. Does the update you pointed me to replace those two updates?

*scratches head*

Oh, that's interesting. It appears that the allowable orange firmware updates don't update the Android OS, just the base firmware. The update I applied back in April is "Firmware version 1.5" (which is still Cupcake) but the build is 2.73.61.66, which is a kernel bugfix. So it looks like Android 2.1 - as in, proper Eclair - isn't going to be deployed on Orange yet. I expect there will be a package installer for Orange, and if you drop your S/N into the download page it'll tell you to bugger off.

yeah, I've got firmware 1.5, but an older build (2.73.51.5)

Weird though that the HTC site shows the Orange ROM update via your link, but not if you search for it from the top level site.
