I've no idea who this guy is, only that he appears to be very, very good at what he does.

I remember watching american football with my dad back in the eighties - Channel 4 did a weekly (iirc) programme covering the goings on in the NFL. We followed the Redskins, the Cowboys, the Raiders, the Dolpins, all these cool-sounding teams with armoured giants clashing against each other.

I remember the time that quarterback got tackled so hard his knee went completely the wrong way. I remember The Refrigerator, who was built like a, well, refridgerator.

Happy days. I wish our TV showed more american football. I'd love to go see a game sometime. Maybe some of my Minneapolis Posse will take me one day?

You come here, and I'd totally take you to a football game! Of course, I'd probably understand less of it than you...

Yup! Apparently, they won on Sunday. I know this only through Facebook friends.

I watch more college football than pro (if you come here I'll take you to a game at The Big House), but I'm familiar with Barry because he played for the Detroit Lions, which is my local pro team.

Unfortunately, the team as a whole was not up to his caliber, and they are now (with him gone) arguably the worst team in the country.

He retired suddenly in the late 90s, while still healthy and with several years left in his contract, causing a lot of controversy (and a few lawsuits).

I just checked wikipedia, and it says he admitted later than losing so much just sapped his competitive spirit.

Since he left, the Lions have become arguably the worst team in the league. The 2008 Detroit Lions became the only team in NFL history to lose all 16 regular season games, and at one point they had a 19 game losing streak (including parts of the seasons before and after that one). A couple of weeks ago, they broke the NFL record by losing their 25th road game in a row (and the streak now stands at 26).

so, what you're saying is don't go and see the Lions play?

:-)

Apparently college football is HUGE over there, I hear. Over here the only people who would know about it would be the players!

And I work at the university with one of the biggest (if not the biggest) stadiums. There have been at least 100,000 fans at EVERY home football game here since 1975.

If you want to run errands on a home game day, you need to plan your route and/or timing around the game traffic.

I'm not a huge football (soccer) fan, but I'd imagine that there are some Premiership football clubs (top level in the UK) that would love attendances like that.

*googles*

Take for instance Newcastle United, 'my' football team - they played Manchester United in August, a very big game and attendance was c. 75k.

Gridiron football is OK in highlights - takes too damn long in real time. It was Redskins QB Joe Theismann who got that awful leg break.

Channel 5 used to show NFL games (until last year), but it's all on Sky or ESPN (except the SuperBowl) now.

Yup, you come to Minneapolis & I'll take you to a Vikings game!
I just went to my first game a couple weeks ago. It was fun actually being there but the Vikes sucked BIG TIME and lost horrendously.
I'd guess American Football makes about as much sense to you as Cricket does to me. *grin*

nah, american football is easy. 4 chances to move the ball 10+ yards down the field then the other guys have a go. Points for touchdown, points for conversions, lots of HUGE guys in vast amounts of armour.

We have a similar game over here, we call it 'rugby', but we tend not to use the sissy helmets and armour. :-P
