The Tiffany Aching books- yes, she is a girl, but it is still a cracking story. It starts with Wee Free Men.

Nation might be another good place to start.

Don't bother with The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodent though.

Yeah I'd back the Mort one as well. It's well writen - not as fantasty focused as the earlier ones. And as people say - about young boy.

Anything before Mort is a bit slapdash, really. However, I'd kick off with the Tiffany Achings, esp as E is only 10.

Think about series, rather than chronology. Where do books tie in together? And go from there. Introduce Sam Vimes et al a bit later on, as the themes are a bit complex.

As seems to be common in this post; I started with TCOM the year they did the TCOM/LF/ER paperback release (85? 86? I forget) and every year since then my birthday present from my folks has been the new Pratchett.

the first terry pratchett i read was johnny and the bomb, i am now reading wee free men. i would recommend them both (though my personal favourite is the latter).
