I know what a spanner is. I just can't see why a bag of spanners would be considered daft.

it's more the fact that you'd consider using the term 'daft as a bag of spanners', which is daft.

Sort of like telling someone about the Cheese Sketch - essentially John Cleese reciting a long long list of various forms of cheese. Doesn't sound funny, but is.

spanners - not inherently daft, unless referred to as such. It's all a bit meta.

ooh! ooh! did I tell you about LB's new favourite thing to do at hometime from nursery? She runs off and attempts to hide, usually under a chair, which leaves most of her sticking out.

I have to try very very hard not to lapse into the 'How Not To Be Seen' sketch.

I've never heard the phrase before and I can't say it conveys much to me, either. I think it's as daft as a bag of polo mint holes.
