I'd go for 'mad as a bag of spanners' mostly.

I know what a spanner is. I just can't see why a bag of spanners would be considered daft.

I only know what a "spanner" is because I've seen an episode of Top Gear on BBC America.

it's more the fact that you'd consider using the term 'daft as a bag of spanners', which is daft.

Sort of like telling someone about the Cheese Sketch - essentially John Cleese reciting a long long list of various forms of cheese. Doesn't sound funny, but is.

spanners - not inherently daft, unless referred to as such. It's all a bit meta.

ooh! ooh! did I tell you about LB's new favourite thing to do at hometime from nursery? She runs off and attempts to hide, usually under a chair, which leaves most of her sticking out.

I have to try very very hard not to lapse into the 'How Not To Be Seen' sketch.

I've never heard the phrase before and I can't say it conveys much to me, either. I think it's as daft as a bag of polo mint holes.

It's quite astonishingly cute

"Now, where *did* LB go?" we all say, to the sound of a small cute person giggling madly from under her chair, failing quite spectacularly Not To Be Seen.

You know, come to think of it, I've heard "dumb as a bag of hammers" over here. I don't know why I didn't make the connection! Hammers, wrenches, they all go in the toolbelt. And they're daft, apparently.

I concur, the phrase should be "as dumb as a bag of hammers" but I've heard the spanners version too, and used it, particularly when I was rootling about in the hall cupboard, and was clonked on the head by my socket set, then I really was a dumb as a bag of spanners. It hurt less than I thought it might, but still quite a lot. I saw spanner shaped stars. And cursed like a navvy.

BTW, I get bonus dyke points for having a socket set, don't I? But minus points for only having used it once.

You totally get bonus points! Hahaha XD

Man, though, getting clocked with a socket wrench must have been pretty bad!

'Tis alright, your secret is safe with me, plus, you don't really need the dyke points, do you?

I've heard spanners more often used in terms of throwing one into the works, rather than bagged. But I get the gist of it, and I do know what a spanner is.
