You know, come to think of it, I've heard "dumb as a bag of hammers" over here. I don't know why I didn't make the connection! Hammers, wrenches, they all go in the toolbelt. And they're daft, apparently.
I concur, the phrase should be "as dumb as a bag of hammers" but I've heard the spanners version too, and used it, particularly when I was rootling about in the hall cupboard, and was clonked on the head by my socket set, then I really was a dumb as a bag of spanners. It hurt less than I thought it might, but still quite a lot. I saw spanner shaped stars. And cursed like a navvy.
BTW, I get bonus dyke points for having a socket set, don't I? But minus points for only having used it once.
