hmm. Ubuntu installed

no internet
screen resolution dodgy - it's a widescreen laptop and the text is very blurry - changed to 1024x768 and it's better but text is huuuuge

no internet.

This was always my problem with linux in the past, getting the damn thing online.

I tried Linux once - it was truly dreadful. I was open minded about it - I wanted to like it, but it was complete shite - just getting it to play a DVD required me to write command line stuff. No doubt some geeks might have gubbed their own pants at such ridiculousness - I just ended up hating it afyer about 3 or 4 hours. I ordered an OEM copy of Vista Ultimate with SP1 - far, far less faffy to use :)

I've tried various flavours over the years and really really wanted to like it.

No internet was the killer for me, and I consider myself reasonably techie.

The only way I've got this far is to have two laptops, side-by-side, one running XP (relatively easy, it all just works) looking up reasons why the ubuntu box wasn't.

the graphics thing is annoying me - I've got the proper linux drivers from nvidia, and the instructions just said

type 'sh NVIDIA[gubbins]'

worked out I needed a terminal open, and eventually worked out I actually needed 'sudo sh NVIDIA[gubbins]', but it fell over every damn time muttering something about being unable to build a kernel.

Ah. You need to install kernel-sources (or kernel-devel, I forget which), and when you re-run the nivida[gubbins] script it'll ask to download the modules, and so on.

Do you know, that surprises me? When I first installed Gutsy, all I needed to do was plug in the ethernet cable, and presto! I was online.

2 weeks ago I installed Hardy on the schleptop, plugged in ethernet cable, boom! I'm online.

What ISP are you using? And are you trying to connect to wired or wireless?

wireless, which I suspect is my problem. Tried it on my old PC with internal PCI wireless doohicky, no joy. Tried it on laptop, no joy.

The only way I got it working this time was to get two computers next to each other -one running windows with access to the 'net so I could type in whatever error message I was getting at the time!
